Let’s talk about the secret of happiness while you recover from a mental illness

By Amanpreet Singh, Psychologist

Mental illnesses take a toll on mental health creating lots of distress for the sufferer too. It is the impact of these illnesses that a person does not feel like doing anything and is not able to feel even the basic emotions of happiness. We don’t understand how important it is to feel happy unless we stop feeling it. There definitely are ways that can help us to be happy and manage stressors better and improve our coping mechanisms. Some of them are as follows.

  • Let go of the desire

Life rarely goes according to our plans. There are failures. Things happen. We make mistakes. Over-focusing and basing happiness on certain results in sadness. Desiring about the results of your actions makes you worried instead of happy. ”A man should never worry about results instead focus on his actions”

  • Set Your Own Goals for Success and Happiness

“Be everything to everybody and you’ll be nothing for yourself.”-John Rushton

Nobody is exactly like another one. Why therefore should we have a single definition of success? The pursuit of societal prosperity is a never-ending rat race. There will always be a superior person. There will never be enough time for everything.

Instead, you understand that every choice has a chance cost. When you decide on anything, you simultaneously decide against doing several other things. It’s okay that way. It’s actually lovely since we get to select our highest ideal. We must establish our own standards for what constitutes success, prosperity, and happiness because if we don’t, society will do it for us, and we will inevitably fall short.

success and happiness

  • Give your all to the pursuits that bring you joy.

You will always be a victim of outside circumstances until you are fully dedicated. You’ll fail more frequently than you think if you depend just on willpower. People tend to exaggerate their own performance, according to research. Most likely, you overestimate how well you are sticking to your resolutions.

But once you’re fully engaged, willpower is no longer necessary. Regardless of the situation, your decision has already been made. It becomes quite simple to say “No” to anything that is not in line with our greatest goals. This means leading a proactive instead of a reactive life.

As Mahatma Gandhi has said, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

  • Thank Yourself For What You Already Have

Gratefulness is the key to happiness. According to psychological studies, those who frequently express thankfulness experience the following advantages:

  • Physical
  • higher immunological capacities
  • less troubled by pains and aches
  • blood pressure reduction
  • Increasing physical activity and improving health.
  • Sleep more and wake up feeling more rested psychological
  • increased levels of happiness
  • More awake, awake, and vigilant
  • More happiness and joy
  • More happiness and optimism
  • More charitable, accommodating, and caring
  • more tolerant
  • Feel less alienated and lonely
  • Keep an appreciation notebook.

In conclusion,

Set aside time each day to reflect on instances of thankfulness related to ordinary occurrences, your personality, or significant individuals in your life. By doing so, you can incorporate appreciation into your regular, everyday life. This will assist you in making the transition from attempting to be grateful occasionally to actually being grateful. Moving from doing to being is the aim.

Ask these three questions to yourself.

You can think carefully about these three questions while reflecting on any element of your life:

“What did I get from ?”

What did I give to?

What difficulties and problems have I brought on?

Make a promise to yourself

According to research, swearing to carry out a behavior increases the probability that it will really be done. As a result, you should declare both privately and publicly that you are going to be more appreciative. Put it in writing. On social media, share it. Inform your closest friends and family.

The majority of individuals just have hobbies. It’s okay that way. Having a way to escape from reality is beneficial. However, studies have shown that anyone may find leisure anywhere. Can your job turn into your free time? —? where it genuinely revives you.

  • Don’t hold off for tomorrow what you can accomplish now.

Never delay your work, try to complete the task now. Delaying one task makes it a habit to delay every other task.

  • Do one unpleasant activity each day.
